Sarawak Aims For Economic Transformation

KUCHING, 8 July  – The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, has outlined Sarawak's ambitious target for economic transformation by the year 2030.

Drawing inspiration from successful economic transformations in other countries, he highlighted the importance of learning from history and adopting effective strategies for progress.

"When we look at history, we see countries that have successfully transformed themselves. One example is China. China was struggling before Deng Xiaoping, but his transformative economic policies changed the entire landscape," said The Premier.

Premier Abang Haji Abdul Rahman cited the return of Chinese talented individuals from United States, including engineers, to their home country as a significant factor in driving China economic growth. He highlighted the example of Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, who returned to China from the United States and revolutionized logistics in the country.

"When I first heard of Alibaba, I thought it was from the Middle East. Little did I know that it was Jack Ma from China who transformed the industry," he added.

Drawing parallels with Japan's economic transformation, he highlighted the Meiji reforms, which saw Japanese individuals acquiring knowledge overseas and returning to spearhead the industrialization of Japan. This approach led to Japan's strong presence in logistics and industries.

Abang Johari emphasized that the focus should be on development and progress, regardless of ethnic backgrounds.

"I don't care whether you're Chinese, Malay, or Iban. What matters is your ability to contribute to the development of Sarawak's economy," he this at the Opening Ceremony of the 77th Associated Chinese Chambers Of Commerce and Industry Of Malaysia (ACCCIM) Annual General Meeting at Pullman Hotel, here..
